ladderback side chair

These chairs are steeped in Appalachian history and are probably my favorite pieces to make. I make them using traditional hand tools & techniques as they were for centuries, using white and red oak logs still green. All the parts are split out of the log and rived along the grain for the strongest possible yield, then worked to size using a drawknife on a shave horse. For this reason, only straight grain oak will do. I try to use local oaks that have fallen from storms (and save from becoming firewood).
